Cycles in a Gym

Personal Training

One of the most difficult things about joining a gym is where to start. You have done the first step correctly by reading this; the second step is to contact a Health and Fitness consultant at fitness@ the leisure centre for a facility tour. You will also have an informal chat about what you would like to achieve. The third step is choosing and keeping an exercise plan that is suitable for you.

This is where our personal trainers can assist you. They will advise and support you on your quest for a healthier living. If you wish to have a personal trainer, we have instructors from speciality areas, including injury and cardiac rehabilitation, sports science as well as general help with your fitness and motivational needs.

Extra Care

The health and fitness consultants based at Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre have been operating a G.P. Referral and Cardiac Rehabilitation scheme for many years. The results have been outstanding. Typical non-exercisers are now regularly enjoying the benefits of specially designed exercise programmes that take their health problems into account.

What types of problems are catered for?

The main groups targeted were those with one or more of the following:

  • A history of heart disease
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Depression and Anxiety
  • Diabetes
  • Low blood pressure
  • High blood pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Obesity

The Lister Hospital and G.P. Surgeries in the surrounding areas have joined the scheme in order to offer safe, effective exercise to their patients at greatly reduced cost. Using the expertise of the highly qualified Fitness Team patients can enjoy the benefits of regular exercise.

Woman on a Exercise

What type of exercise is on offer?

The Health and Fitness Consultants will tailor the exercise to suit you. They will advise you of the most suitable activity for your needs. The fitness suite is fully equipped with a wide range of cardiovascular machines, resistance machines and free weights. The Dance Studio has a variety of instructed classes, including a specialised circuit for heart patients.

Your Commitment

The aim of your G.P. and the Health and Fitness Consultants, is to encourage you to be responsible for your own health. You will be encouraged to try and attend two exercise sessions a week and follow the lifestyle advice given. The wide choice of classes and times available should make this easy for you.

What to wear

What to wear is only important in terms of comfort and suitability. Style does not matter in a relaxed environment of fitness@the leisure centre. Loose comfortable clothing i.e. T-shirts, leggings, jogging bottoms and trainers are fine. There are male and female changing rooms, showers facilities and lockers to secure your belongings.

Refreshments

It is recommended that you drink plenty of water before, during and after you exercise.

The Cost

To encourage you to attend, the cost of all sessions is kept as low as possible for G.P. Referral customers, providing they attend at the times specified on the current timetable.

How to join

Contact your Doctor and ask if you can be referred to the Extra Care programme. Once your Doctor has signed the Medical Clearance Form, call 01438 242 607 or email juanita.duffett@stevenage-leisure.co.uk to arrange your initial consultation with a Health and Fitness Consultant. Bring your Medical Clearance Form with you to your consultant.

On arrival at the Reception you will need to pay each time you attend. Check out the added benefits of the FIT card pre-payment scheme.

During your induction session, the classes and equipment will be explained to you and you will also meet other participants on the scheme.

A personal exercise plan will be drawn up for you depending on the type of exercise needed. The Health and Fitness Consultants will support, encourage and advise you constantly. Once you are competent and confident, the Health and Fitness Consultants may authorise you to train outside the Extra Care sessions in fitness@ the leisure centre.

We look forward to meeting you.
